Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong lodged a police report over a viral video linking him and DAP to a Rohingya religious school in Melaka.

MELAKA: The police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have been urged to launch an immediate investigation into a viral video allegedly linking Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong and DAP to a religious school for the Rohingya community in Melaka.

Low said allegations that he and DAP were conspiring with and protecting the school were defamatory and had damaged the reputations of the party, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong and himself.

“For this reason, I asked my assistant, Tan Chin Gwan, to lodge a police report at the Tengkera Police Station this morning to enable the authorities to investigate the matter, take appropriate action and protect my reputation.

“This is an accusation and defamation directed at DAP, me and Khoo, as the Kota Melaka MP,” he told a press conference at the Tengkera Police Station here today.

He claimed that the video, shared via the Facebook account Steven Lee, also linked the school in Pengkalan Rama Pantai to DAP. He described the move as inappropriate, particularly with the Melaka state election approaching.

Low said the caption accompanying the 45-second video, which was posted on Facebook at about 8.35 am today and had been viewed by around 462 people, claimed that the building housed a DAP religious school for the Rohingya community and that DAP was complicit in protecting it.

“I wish to stress that DAP has no authority to establish or operate religious schools, as matters relating to religious enforcement in the state fall under the jurisdiction of the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM).

“The police report was therefore lodged to ensure that the viral allegations are thoroughly investigated, particularly as they touch on 3R issues involving religion, race and royalty. At the same time, we want JAIM to take action on the matter within its jurisdiction,” he said.

Low said he was aware of the building, adding that concerns over its use by the Rohingyas had been raised several times during his time as assemblyman and discussed at meetings of the Kampung Pengkalan Pantai Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK).

He said reports of the JPKK meetings had also been forwarded to the district office for further action by the relevant authorities.
