Police nab three in Kota Belud anti-drug operation

KOTA BELUD: Three local men were arrested after they were allegedly found in possession of syabu during an operation along Jalan Kota Belud-Tuaran near Kampung Paka-Paka, here, Tuesday.

Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said the arrests were made during Op Perdagangan conducted by a police team led by Inspector Mohd Firdaus Che Mustafa, comprising four officers from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) and an officer from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (BSJN) of the Kota Belud District Police Headquarters (IPD).

He said inspections of the three suspects, all in their 30s, uncovered drugs believed to be syabu inside a black Lacoste sling bag.

“Following the discovery, all three suspects were arrested and handed over to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Kota Belud IPD for further investigation and action in accordance with existing legal provisions,” he said in a statement.

He added that urine screening tests conducted on all three suspects returned positive results for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

Shahrudin said the case is being investigated under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of dangerous drugs, which carries a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.

“In addition, the case is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug use, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction,” he said.

He said police would continue intensifying operations to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the district to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.

He also urged the public to continue providing information on criminal activities, particularly drug abuse and trafficking, to the Kota Belud police station or the nearest police station to assist the authorities in taking appropriate action.
