Police officer suffered external injuries after being struck by a Proton Saga while controlling traffic for the Sultan’s convoy in Tumpat, Kelantan.

KOTA BHARU: A member of the Tumpat district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division was injured after being hit by a car while performing traffic control duties at the Kepulau traffic light intersection, Palekbang in Tumpat, earlier yesterday.

Tumpat district police chief ACP Mohd Khairi Shafie said that in the incident at 1.25 pm, the 22-year-old officer was closing off the road from Morak to Palekbang to give way to the convoy of the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V.

He said the group was on their way to perform Friday prayers and attend the Majlis Jamuan Rakyat in conjunction with Sultan Muhammad V’s 57th birthday celebration.

“The preliminary investigation found that a Proton Saga car, driven by a 55-year-old local woman, from the direction of Morak allegedly failed to notice the presence of police officers conducting traffic control duties before hitting the officer,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Mohd Khairi said that as a result of the incident, the police officer fell at the scene and sustained external injuries before being taken to Tumpat Hospital for outpatient treatment.

He said the driver of the car involved did not suffer any injuries.

“The case is being investigated under Section 79(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and further investigations are ongoing, including efforts to locate dashboard camera (dashcam) recordings or other recordings that could assist the investigation,” he said.

He also advised all road users to always comply with the instructions of police officers performing traffic control duties and to pay full attention to road conditions, especially during special operations and traffic control, to avoid any unwanted incidents.
