POLICE in Terengganu police are pressing ahead with investigations to determine the extent of a lawyer’s alleged involvement in a plot to smuggle drugs into Marang Prison, as authorities weigh whether to charge the suspect or seek an extension of his remand.
Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the decision on whether the suspect would be brought before the courts or remain in custody would depend entirely on the findings of the investigation currently under way.
The remand period of the 32-year-old male lawyer is due to expire this Sunday.
“At this stage, the police cannot disclose any modus operandi related to the case in order to avoid disrupting the investigation,” he said when contacted on Friday.
However, Mohd Khairi said police are seeking the cooperation of a woman identified as Nurul Norasikin Aladin, 30, from Kampung Batin, Seberang Takir, who is believed to be able to assist in the investigation.
“Police are requesting that Nurul Norasikin Aladin, also known as ‘Ikin’, come forward to the nearest police station to assist with the investigation,” he said.
He added that she may also contact the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent Mohammad Azmi Awang Lah, at 010-9213516.
Mohd Khairi further urged members of the public who may know the whereabouts of the woman to provide information to the nearest police station to aid the investigation.
On Thursday, media reports said a lawyer had been detained to assist police investigations into an incident involving a prisoner allegedly bringing drugs into Marang Prison.
Mohd Khairi previously told a press conference at the Terengganu police contingent headquarters that the lawyer is believed to have conspired in smuggling drugs into the prison on December 23.
The drugs were allegedly brought in through a male inmate who was also the lawyer’s client, following the completion of court proceedings at the Kuala Terengganu High Court.
He said the suspect was arrested at about 10.45am on December 29 along Jalan Hiliran, Pulau Kambing. - January 2, 2026
