PDRM investigates Facebook account owner for allegedly insulting the Sultan of Selangor, with 21 police reports and device seized.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is investigating the owner or administrator of the Facebook account ‘Huayan The Pureland Learning Centre’ over a post allegedly insulting the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar (pic) said that the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (USJT) of the Prosecution/Legal Division (D5) of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), also seized the device used to upload the post on April 25.

“To date, 21 police reports have been received and a total of 21 witnesses, including individuals who lodged the reports, have been called to have their statements recorded to assist in the investigation process,” he said in a statement today.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Kumar said firm action will be taken against any party that misuses social media for unlawful purposes, especially those involving sensitive 3R (royalty, religion, race) issues.

“Freedom of speech under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution has its limitations. Therefore, the public is advised to always be prudent and responsible when making any statements in public spaces or on social media,” he said.

Yesterday, several Selangor State Executive Council members urged the PDRM and MCMC to take firm action against the post that insulted the Sultan of Selangor.
