NIBONG TEBAL: Police are investigating a fire that destroyed a licensed firecracker and fireworks stall in Taman Pekaka.
Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said five reports have been lodged so far.
The case is being probed under Section 286 of the Penal Code for negligence involving explosive materials. Azizee confirmed investigations are ongoing.
The blaze occurred in the early hours of Sunday. It also damaged a Yamaha Y15 motorcycle by about 90 percent.
Three air-conditioning units outside a nearby house were also affected.
The State Fire and Rescue Department confirmed no injuries or fatalities were reported. A viral social media video showed customers at a nearby restaurant fleeing sparks.
Meanwhile, Seberang Perai mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said the City Council has revoked the stall’s permit. The council is monitoring other similar stalls in the area.
He said the stall had a valid permit issued by MBSP from Feb 19 to March 24, 2026. The cause remains under investigation by the fire department.
To prevent repeat incidents, MBSP will tighten permit conditions. This will include requiring fire extinguishers and valid insurance coverage.
Baderul Amin said the council takes the incident seriously. It remains committed to ensuring public safety through stricter monitoring.
