Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party Supreme Council member cum Vice Youth Chief Yong Yit Lee has lodged a police report against a commentator over alleged inflammatory social media remarks calling for the closure of Chinese vernacular schools across Malaysia.

Yong lodged the complaint after the individual purportedly published a Facebook post on Oct 24 using what he described as vulgar and demeaning language against Chinese education and the Chinese community.

The post allegedly contained insulting terms whilst accusing Chinese schools of undermining national unity. The individual reportedly demanded the Government shut down or seize control of all 1,300 Chinese vernacular primary schools (SJKC) nationwide.

Yong said the statements breach multiple laws, including the Sedition Act 1948 for promoting racial hostility, as well as provisions under the Penal Code and Communications and Multimedia Act for inciting tension through online platforms.

“As a graduate of Tshung Tsin Secondary School in Kota Kinabalu, I can personally vouch that Chinese independent and vernacular schools have produced generations of disciplined, patriotic Malaysians,” he said.

“Attacking these institutions insults our community and challenges the Federal Constitution, which guarantees educational rights under Article 12,” he added.

Yong, a lawyer, said Sabah and Sarawak have long maintained peaceful multi-ethnic coexistence, and urged authorities to protect the Borneo states from what he called toxic racial politics imported from Malaya.
