The controversy surrounding the book “Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey” by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has taken an unexpected turn, with 182 police reports lodged against it.
Critics allege the book attempts to proselytize Christianity, but these claims have been met with skepticism, especially from prominent figures such as Datuk Azis Jamman, a former deputy home minister and Parti Warisan information chief.
Azis, a devoted Muslim and a close friend of Yeoh, has expressed his confusion over the uproar. "Based on my understanding after reading the book, there is nothing in it that attempts to convert anyone to Christianity," he shared on Facebook. He described the book as an "inspiring personal journey," reflecting Yeoh's experiences, struggles, and achievements rather than any attempt at religious proselytization.
In his heartfelt post, Azis emphasized that Yeoh has always respected his faith. He stated that as a committed Muslim himself and a close friend of YB Hannah Yeoh, he can safely affirm that she has never, at any time, attempted to influence or convert him to Christianity, adding that the backlash against her and her book seems puzzling, unfair and baseless.
The reports against Yeoh have reignited debates about religious tolerance and mutual respect in Malaysia. Azis, a proud Sabahan, highlighted Sabah's harmonious coexistence of diverse races and religions as an example of the unity that Malaysia should strive for. "Although we come from diverse races and religions, we Sabahans continue to uphold peace, harmony, and mutual respect for each other’s beliefs and cultures," he said, offering a hopeful reminder of the country’s potential for unity amidst diversity.
Azis's support for Yeoh highlights the importance of standing against unfounded accusations, especially when they threaten the values of mutual respect and understanding. His post serves not only as a defense of Yeoh but also as a call to uphold Malaysia’s multicultural harmony.
As Yeoh faces this controversy, her allies remind Malaysians of the dangers of turning personal narratives into tools for division. Perhaps the real message of “Becoming Hannah” is one of resilience and unity ~ qualities Malaysia needs now more than ever.
