GEORGE TOWN: The Marine Police Force (PPM) Region One seized seven tonnes of pig carcasses during a raid at an illegal jetty in Sungai Merbok, Kedah.
Region One PPM Commander ACP Jaffri Bidin said the operation, carried out at 2 a.m., resulted in the arrest of seven local men suspected of transporting pig carcasses without a permit.
The raid was conducted by the Marine Intelligence Unit as part of Ops Taring Landai and Ops Taring Gelora in the waters around Tanjung Dawai.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the carcasses were believed to have been brought in from Thailand via sea routes before being transferred to land for local distribution,” he said in a statement.
Jaffri added that all suspects failed to provide any documents or permits from the Department of Veterinary Services.
In addition to the pig carcasses, authorities also seized two refrigerated lorries, a 40-foot fibre boat without registration numbers, three Yamaha 250-horsepower engines, and three bundles of keys.
The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM795,100.
The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953 and has been referred to the Kedah Veterinary Services Department for further action.
