The government has decided to deploy police officers to schools nationwide in a move aimed at strengthening student safety and curbing the growing issues of bullying, abuse, and school-related crime.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the decision was made after careful consideration of the increasing reports of misconduct and violence in educational institutions. He explained that the initiative would ensure better security within school compounds while fostering a safer learning environment for students and staff.

However, Anwar emphasised that clear guidelines would be established to ensure that the presence of police officers would not intimidate or cause unnecessary fear among children. Instead, the officers’ role would focus on safeguarding students, maintaining order, and providing support when disciplinary or criminal concerns arise.

In addition to enhancing security personnel, the Prime Minister revealed that a National Education Council will be formed to address long-standing weaknesses in Malaysia’s education system. The council will serve as a collaborative platform to integrate input from teachers, parents, education experts, and policymakers, ensuring a more cohesive approach to reform and policy implementation.

As part of the broader effort to boost school safety, the government has also approved an allocation of RM5 million for the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in selected schools. The surveillance initiative aims to deter misconduct, aid investigations into incidents, and reinforce the sense of security within school premises.

Anwar added that the government plans to strengthen the mental and emotional support structure for students by increasing access to counselling services. Although not all counsellors may hold full accreditation, efforts are underway to ensure trained personnel are available to guide students through behavioural and emotional challenges.

The Prime Minister also noted that the recruitment of assistant dormitory wardens would be expanded, with opportunities to include military veterans, who bring valuable experience in discipline and structure. These appointments are expected to be made systematically to maintain professionalism and order within boarding schools.

Furthermore, the government is reviewing procedures for hiring security guards, canteen operators, and cleaners, with the intention of implementing a more thorough screening process. This measure aims to ensure that only individuals with clean backgrounds and proper qualifications are entrusted with roles that place them in daily contact with students.

Through these combined efforts, the government seeks to create a more secure, supportive, and disciplined school environment across Malaysia.
