Police will summon organisers and participants of the ‘Tangkap Azam Baki’ rally over a firecracker incident that caused brief panic in Kuala Lumpur.
KUALA LUMPUR: Police will call upon the organisers and participants of the “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally to assist with investigations into a firecracker incident that occurred during the assembly in the city centre this afternoon.
Dang Wangi District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said that investigations are being conducted under Section 6 and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
The move follows an incident that sparked brief panic and commotion among those gathered.

Sazalee confirmed that police are working to identify the individuals responsible for discharging the pyrotechnics.
Authorities have not ruled out summoning additional witnesses, including members of the public who may have been in the vicinity during the disturbance.
“Investigations will be conducted in detail. We will work to trace the source and identify those behind the firecracker incident,” he told the media following the conclusion of the rally.
He added that formal statements will be recorded from all relevant parties as part of the standard investigation process.
According to police reports, the rally—organised by the Tangkap Azam Baki Secretariat—commenced at the Sogo complex and proceeded toward Jalan Raja.
The march was eventually halted near Dataran Merdeka due to police cordons and crowd control measures.
Sazalee placed the turnout at approximately 300 participants, adding that around 200 personnel from the Kuala Lumpur police contingent and the Dang Wangi district headquarters were deployed to maintain public order.
“The rally proceeded peacefully overall from Sogo. However, at the initial stage, there was a minor disturbance involving the discharge of firecrackers. Fortunately, there were no injuries or major incidents reported,” he said.
He further noted that no reports of property damage had been lodged by local traders or the public.
The rally dispersed at approximately 5.35pm. Addressing allegations from organisers that the firecracker incident may have been an act of deliberate sabotage, Sazalee maintained that the police would investigate all possibilities.
“We cannot confirm that at this stage. We will gather all available evidence to determine the true source of the firecrackers,” he said.
He also confirmed that an additional, unexploded firecracker was recovered by officers during a post-incident sweep of the scene.
No arrests have been made thus far, and investigations remain ongoing.
