POLICE are actively tracking the owner of a mobile number used to send threatening messages to all liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Bintulu, Sarawak, in what is being treated as a serious national security matter.
Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Bukit Aman, Datuk M Kumar, said authorities are in the midst of identifying the individual responsible.
“We are in the process of identifying who sent the threats. From a security standpoint, control measures will be stepped up,” he told reporters after attending the Sixth Edition of the National Forensic Science Symposium for Law Enforcement (NAFSLE) 2025, held at the Royal Malaysia Police College on Tuesday.
The threat first came to light after a Petronas officer based in Bintulu lodged a police report, claiming to have received multiple threatening text messages from an unknown sender.
“The officer received several threats via SMS. After receiving the threats repeatedly, he filed a police report,” said Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
On Monday, it was reported that the government had ordered an immediate tightening of security measures at all LNG facilities in Bintulu following the threats.
In a statement, the National Security Council (MKN) confirmed that the directive was issued to enable security and enforcement agencies to swiftly investigate the matter.
“The national security apparatus remains on high alert and has already put in place precautionary measures in response to the threats,” the statement added.
Authorities have yet to disclose the nature or origin of the messages, but officials have assured that operations at the affected facilities continue under heightened security. - September 9, 2025
