Police warn against exploitation of families of FRU crash victims

THERE have been attempts by certain parties to exploit and manipulate the families of Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel involved in the tragic lorry collision in Teluk Intan on 13 May, according to Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin.

Speaking at a press conference following the handing-over ceremony of the Gerik District Police Chief post today, Noor Hisam said: “We have appointed lawyers to represent all the victims' families and affected personnel to prevent any exploitation regarding compensation and donations.”

He advised next-of-kin and injured personnel to avoid engaging with unknown individuals, stressing that all matters should be channelled through the appointed legal representatives.

“We’ve seen attempts to fish in troubled waters. While I cannot disclose specifics, the issues being raised involve financial and legal matters,” he said.

The crash, which occurred at 8.54am, involved an FRU transport truck and a lorry carrying stones. Nine FRU members were killed in the accident, five others sustained serious injuries, and four more were lightly hurt.

Noor Hisam also said the police are continuing to provide psychological and emotional support to the victims’ families and affected personnel through the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS).

“Under JIPS, the Religious and Counselling Division (BAKA) includes trained counsellors who are providing ongoing support. We are not abandoning them; all aspects of their wellbeing are being carefully looked after,” he said. - May 27, 2025
