KUALA TERENGGANU: A police corporal was charged in the sessions court here today with two counts of accepting bribes in return for smuggling prohibited items to a lock-up detainee three years ago.
Alif Abdul Jamal, 33, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before judge Azhar Othman, Bernama reported.
The prosecution alleges that Alif, who was on duty at the Chukai police station lock-up at the time, received a bribe of RM1,000 on April 17 and RM450 on Nov 30, 2021, from Jainah Abdullah to smuggle tobacco into the lock-up for Firdaus Zahid.
The charges were framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Azhar set bail at RM4,000 with one surety, with the additional conditions that Alif surrender his passport to the court, report to the MACC office every month until the disposal of the case, and refrain from interfering with prosecution witnesses.
The court set June 5 for case management.
