In a concerning development, five members of the police mobile patrol unit (MPV) faced charges in the Magistrate’s Court for allegedly extorting a factory worker on February 1. The accused individuals, namely Sergeant Rozaini Abu Hassan, Corporal Muhammad Mustaqim Ismail, Lance Corporal Muhamad Syakir Haikal Hasli, Corporal Mohd Nurizuan Ahmad Suhaimi, and Lance Corporal Muhamad Khusairi Ahamad, pleaded not guilty during the court proceedings led by Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit.
The charges against them revolve around the intentional act of extortion by instilling fear in a 28-year-old man, who, after being accused of drug possession, purportedly surrendered RM4,500 to the accused police officers. The alleged offense occurred along Jalan Permatang Tinggi, heading towards Simpang Ampat in the Seberang Perai Tengah district, at 10:15 pm on February 1.
The charges, under Section 384 of the Penal Code, carry severe consequences. If convicted, the accused officers could face imprisonment for up to 10 years, a fine, caning, or any combination of these penalties. The accused officers pleaded not guilty to these charges, signaling their intention to contest the allegations.
During the court proceedings, bail was set at RM5,000 each, with one surety for each accused. The defense, represented by lawyer V S Kumar, appealed for a reasonable bail amount, highlighting that the accused officers have families to support. The court, taking this into consideration, granted bail to the accused, providing them temporary freedom until the next court appearance.
The case is scheduled for mention on March 15, allowing both the prosecution and defense to prepare their respective cases. This incident raises concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officers and underscores the importance of maintaining public trust in the police force. As the legal process unfolds, it will be essential to determine the veracity of the charges and ensure a fair trial for all parties involved. This case also serves as a reminder of the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies to uphold the principles of justice and integrity.
