KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — Polish President Andrzej Duda has advocated for a stronger European Union (EU) role in regional security, warning that the Russia-Ukraine conflict and growing global uncertainty have exposed weaknesses in Europe’s security and peace system.
He said the war in Ukraine has prompted a significant reassessment of Europe’s security posture.
The EU has realised that it needs to strengthen its defence capabilities and act more decisively in the face of external threats.
“We are witnessing a new chapter in the history of the EU. The moment Russia launched its full-scale military action against Ukraine, many European leaders recognised that the era of peaceful coexistence in Europe was under serious strain,” Duda said.
He made the remarks when answering a question during a public lecture titled ‘Poland’s Position in the EU: Challenges and Choices’ at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) of Universiti Malaya today.
Duda added that the conversation on rebuilding Europe’s defence industry and strengthening military preparedness gained momentum during Covid-19. The pandemic exposed critical gaps in supply chains and public health systems.
“The conclusion was that Europe must better equip itself to handle potential crises, by re-establishing supply chains within the region to respond more effectively to emerging risks,” he said.
The developments reflect a broader shift in Europe’s approach to security.
“There is now a shared understanding that deeper cooperation is essential to addressing future challenges collectively,” Duda said.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict began with Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 and has since evolved into a protracted and complex war marked by shifting frontlines, mounting casualties, and widespread destruction.
As of this month, peace efforts have made little headway, and both sides continue to engage in heavy ground and covert operations along contested regions.
