The political theater in Selangor continues to dazzle, with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) Selat Klang assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari stirring the pot by expressing support for Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, much to the chagrin of Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Selangor chief and Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Azmin Ali. Azmin, never one to miss a beat in the symphony of political melodrama, condemned Abdul Rashid's support as a betrayal of voters' will, showcasing a virtuoso performance in political irony.
Azmin's denouncement of Abdul Rashid's actions as "treacherous and irresponsible" is akin to a pot calling the kettle black, considering his own acrobatics across political alliances. From acrobatics, let's shift to arithmetic—Abdul Rashid, elected under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, secured his seat with a whopping majority of 42,703 votes, a feat that speaks volumes about his electorate's confidence in him. However, this confidence has been recently replaced with Azmin's appointment as the Selangor Bersatu chief, signalling a dramatic shift in the political landscape.
Azmin's promise of "action based on Bersatu’s provisions and constitution" raises eyebrows, especially given Bersatu's recent amendment to prevent defections after six of its federal lawmakers openly declared support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This amendment seems more like a desperate attempt to plug the leaky boat rather than a principled stance against political opportunism.
As the political pendulum swings, Bersatu finds itself in a tight spot, with Azmin hinting at candidates to fill the six parliamentary seats vacated due to support for Anwar The decision-making process, he assures, will be fair to all parties, a statement as believable as a fairy tale in Malaysian politics.
In this drama of defections and denunciations, one thing remains clear—the thirst for power and the fragility of political allegiances.
As the actors jostle for positions, the audience, the Malaysian electorate, watches with a mix of amusement and exasperation, wondering if this circus will ever end. Will the jostling ever end?
