Kota Kinabalu: The 17th state election results represent more than mere numbers, they mark a historic turning point that calls for all local parties to unite for Sabah’s future, said Upko Deputy President Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin.
He said the Election Commission’s results clearly reflect the people’s desire for a new political direction free from outside interference.
“Enough of external meddling. Sabah belongs to us and we must determine our own future. We can be friends with national parties, we can discuss and cooperate, but we no longer want undue influence over Sabah’s destiny,” he said.
Donald said Sabahans have unmistakably rejected inappropriate external influence in determining the State’s future, referring to Khairy Jamaluddin’s description of the outcome as Sabah’s “GPS moment” — a golden opportunity to build local political strength similar to Sarawak.
He urged Sabah leaders to set aside egos, friction and past grievances to seize this momentum, noting that division has long fractured the State’s political landscape.
“Upko urges all local party leaders to come together honestly and seek reconciliation to form a truly united State Cabinet representing all Sabahans,” he said.
He added that building a stable, unified government is crucial ahead of the next general election, expected by February 2028 at the latest, stressing that Sabah must present a strong political bloc by sending 25 united Members of Parliament to champion State rights.
“Only then can we claim Sabah’s constitutional rights and determine our future on our own terms. Listen to the people’s voice, our conscience as sons and daughters of Sabah. Sabah United. Sabah First. Our home, we protect,” he said.
