Polygamous leader from Netflix series to be sentenced in child abuse case

  • Polygamous sect leader Samuel Bateman is set to be sentenced in an Arizona state court on Tuesday following his conviction on three counts of child abuse.
  • The state charges stem from an August 2022 incident in which police rescued three young girls from an unventilated trailer during a traffic stop.
  • Bateman faces a mandatory sentence of four to eight years for each abuse count, with the judge deciding whether the terms will run consecutively or concurrently.
  • The self-proclaimed prophet is already serving a 50-year federal prison sentence for orchestrating child sexual abuse and plotting to kidnap girls from protective custody.
  • Bateman, a former follower of convicted sect leader Warren Jeffs, represented himself at trial and claimed he did not realize the children were inside the trailer.
