In a surprising twist of patriarchal wisdom, Kubang Kerian MP Tuan Ibrahim suggests a 'way out' for unmarried women over 30: becoming second wives.
This proposal, veiled as "moral support," echoes a condescending narrative that implies marriage is the sole purpose for women.
With about eight million single women, Tuan Ibrahim's solution is not only simplistic but a superficial attempt at addressing a complex issue.
Polygamy, legal for Muslims in Malaysia, remains a divisive topic. While conservatives argue religious legitimacy, progressives, like Sisters of Islam, rightly assert that its relevance is questionable in the modern era. Tuan Ibrahim's call for support is thinly veiled advocacy for an outdated practice, conveniently ignoring the voices that question its suitability today.
The backlash from female MPs, notably Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and DAP MP Yeo Bee Yin, rightly questions Tuan Ibrahim's perception of women's issues. The insinuation that being unmarried is a problem and needs a "way out" is not only archaic but perpetuates harmful stereotypes. Yeoh's point about neglect in polygamous marriages strikes at the heart of the matter, challenging the romanticized notion of multiple wives coexisting harmoniously.
Tuan Ibrahim's defence, citing data on difficulties finding husbands, only underscores the reduction of women to statistics. Yeo's retort, rightly labelling the proposal as sexist, hits the mark. The refusal to retract the suggestion signals a concerning persistence in disregarding the legitimate concerns raised by female representatives.
While Minister of Women, Children and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri remains silent on this specific proposal, her focus on raising the fertility rate appears to sidestep the deeper issue at hand.
The declining fertility rate may indeed be a concern, but framing polygamy as a solution is a misguided attempt at addressing a complex societal challenge.
In a nation striving for progress, it's disheartening to witness influential figures advocating for regressive solutions. Tuan Ibrahim's proposal not only perpetuates gender stereotypes but also distracts from genuine efforts needed to address the evolving dynamics of relationships and marriage in contemporary Malaysian society.
