BANGI, Aug 7 - A total of 17 dengue cases have been recorded in Bangi Avenue 3, prompting concern among residents and leading the residents' association, together with the Hulu Langat District Health Office (PKD), to carry out a community clean-up and door-to-door inspections.
The operation, which also involved resident volunteers, covered nearly 600 three-storey homes to identify Aedes mosquito breeding sites and raise awareness about the dangers of dengue.
Inspections found that some homes, particularly those with up to seven bathrooms, had poorly maintained or rarely used facilities where stagnant water had accumulated, creating ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.
Residents' Association deputy chairman Mohd Kamal Mohd Ishak said the comprehensive house-to-house inspections enabled health officials to identify mosquito breeding sites more effectively.
"Among the areas we frequently found to be problematic were unused bathrooms and toilets, clogged drains, and water storage tanks on the upper floors of houses," he said.
Mohd Kamal said the association had previously organised several community clean-up programmes, but participation was limited because many residents were tenants or foreign workers, while some houses were unoccupied.
He hopes information displayed on banners throughout the neighbourhood will encourage more residents to play an active role in preventing the spread of dengue.
Meanwhile, Hulu Langat PKD personnel advised residents to spend at least 10 minutes each week inspecting their homes to ensure there was no stagnant water that could serve as breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.
They also reminded residents that dengue can cause serious complications, particularly among children, older adults and people with chronic illnesses.
The residents' association hopes the joint operation with the Hulu Langat PKD will increase public awareness and encourage the community to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, eliminating Aedes breeding sites and reporting high-risk areas to the authorities.
