Doctors looking after Pope Francis have insisted the pontiff is "fine" at the end of his first week being in hospital in Rome with pneumonia.

Surgeon Sergio Alfieri told reporters on Friday: "We are working every day [to give him] all the medicine, all the drugs that he needs to recover, but of course, he's older, he has some chronic disease."

He added the Pope has “half” a lung in one of his lungs as a result of surgery when he was younger, and that he would remain in hospital for at least all of next week.
