Pope Leo XIV went to the assistance of a man attending his general audience on St Peter's Square in Vatican City after the man felt faint, media reports said.

Leo is shown in social media clips rushing to the man to check on his condition. The man is then taken away in a wheelchair.

The pope holds a general audience on the square in front of St Peter's every Wednesday morning. Temperatures reached 30 degrees Celsius at midday on Wednesday.

The Adnkronos news agency reported that the man sank to the ground presumably feeling faint as a result of the heat.

He had apparently been standing in a queue waiting to shake the pope's hand.

Once assistants had covered the man's head and taken him away in the wheelchair, Leo resumed the audience as scheduled.
