KUALA LUMPUR — High-profile personalities, including a former national football player and a prominent motivational speaker, have had their luxury rides impounded in a massive nationwide crackdown by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

A total of 1,814 vehicles have been seized under the sweeping initiative, known as Ops Luxury.

JPJ Deputy Director-General (Planning and Operations) Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi revealed that the multi-year operation has intensified significantly.

Out of the total seizures, 915 high-end vehicles—including elite brands like Porsche and Lamborghini—were intercepted and confiscated this year alone.

This follows the impounding of 899 vehicles last year for critical violations, primarily the failure to renew Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), commonly known as road tax.

High-profile seizures

The former national footballer's vehicle was intercepted early yesterday morning after authorities flagged a trifecta of serious violations: an expired driving licence (which lapsed in December last year), an expired road tax, and a complete lack of insurance coverage.

“For the past five months, the former footballer has still failed to obtain insurance coverage and a valid road tax for the vehicle,” Jazmanie stated during a press conference at the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (WPKL) JPJ depot last night.

Also in attendance was JPJ Senior Enforcement Director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan.

In a separate incident on the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), enforcement officers impounded a luxury vehicle valued at over RM500,000 belonging to a well-known motivational speaker.

The vehicle was found to have an expired road tax of nearly a month, no insurance coverage, and was illegally displaying an old registration number despite having undergone a number plate interchange.

Zero tolerance for excuses

Jazmanie issued a stern warning to elite vehicle owners, emphasizing that failing to renew road tax is a severe offense under the Road Transport Act 1987.

He reinforced that the department will maintain a zero-compromise stance, proceeding directly with hefty compounds and vehicle confiscations.

“The usual excuse given by vehicle owners is that they overlooked the renewal, but that is unreasonable because the MyJPJ application issues reminder notifications when a vehicle’s licence is about to expire,” Jazmanie countered.

The Deputy Director-General closed by reminding the public of the broader public safety threat posed by these violations, noting that operating a vehicle without a valid road tax invalidates insurance protection, leaving both the owner and innocent road users highly vulnerable in the event of an accident. - May 25, 2026
