Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced that the Malaysian government will investigate port handlers responsible for allowing an Israeli shipping company's container to enter Malaysian roads. Loke stated that the ministry intends to reprimand the logistics company involved in this incident.
The container in question belongs to Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd, an Israeli company. Despite the government's directive that such companies are not permitted to dock in Malaysia and must return to their country of origin, a container belonging to Zim was recently spotted on Malaysian roads.
Loke acknowledged that mistakes may have been made by the port handlers in allowing the container to enter the country. He emphasized that the ministry will conduct a thorough investigation before taking any action.
Last year, it was made clear that Zim was not allowed to enter Malaysia. Loke explained that even if they attempted to do so, they would be closely monitored by international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) tracking their movements. He added that Zim had previously operated in Malaysia, and although they still have several containers in the country, they have been instructed to gradually remove them.
Regarding the recent incident, Loke emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring compliance with its directives. He warned that severe action would be taken against any existing companies or individuals attempting to smuggle goods into Malaysia.
Loke stated that currently, there are four or five Zim containers left in Malaysia, which will be transported out of the country's ports in due course. A video circulating on social media showing a cargo truck transporting a container with the Zim logo further highlighted the issue.
Following the outbreak of the war in Palestine, Israeli-based companies, including Zim, were asked to leave Malaysian waters. Malaysia has been vocal in its support for Palestine, and the government's actions regarding Zim's operations reflect its stance on the matter.
The investigation into the port handlers' actions underscores Malaysia's commitment to upholding its policies and principles regarding international affairs. The government's response to this incident demonstrates its firm stance on issues related to Palestine and its determination to ensure compliance with its directives.
