Explore Malaysia's achievements and inspirational stories

Malaysia’s small businesses have gained valuable reach through online marketplaces. For many, the next challenge is turning that reach into stronger customer relationships and more sustainable margins.

The Pos Malaysia SME Jumpstart Workshop 2026 aims to address that shift. Taking place on 7 October in Kuala Lumpur, the one-day programme will bring together entrepreneurs, business leaders and industry partners to explore direct-to-consumer (D2C) growth, digital commerce, logistics and customer retention.

Moving SMEs Beyond Marketplace Dependence

Online marketplaces have lowered barriers for businesses entering e-commerce. They offer ready-made infrastructure and access to large groups of consumers.

But growing through these platforms can also leave businesses dependent on marketplace fees, policies and algorithms. Building an owned sales channel gives SMEs another route to customers while allowing them to develop their own customer data and relationships.

This will be a central theme of the workshop, which carries the theme “Scale Beyond Marketplaces to D2C.”

The programme will cover customer acquisition, brand building, digital readiness, funding, logistics and sustainable business expansion. It will also examine how businesses can improve their visibility through SEO, Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).

Building More Sustainable SME Growth

For Pos Malaysia, the initiative also reflects a broader role for logistics companies in Malaysia’s digital economy.

As more SMEs sell directly through websites and social channels, delivery and fulfilment become part of the customer experience. Reliable shipping can influence customer satisfaction, repeat purchases and trust in a brand.

Charles William, Group Chief Sales Officer of Pos Malaysia, said businesses need to look beyond sales volume and pay closer attention to customer acquisition costs and repeat purchases.

He said selling directly can help businesses own customer relationships, improve margins through retention and reduce dependence on the policies or fee structures of a single marketplace.

That approach is increasingly relevant as Malaysian SMEs look for ways to build resilient businesses rather than compete mainly on price.

Founders and Industry Experts Share Practical Lessons

The programme will feature Charles William alongside Datuk Wira Dr. Azizan Osman of RichWorks and Edwin Wang, Co-Founder of Signature Market.

Participants will hear founder experiences and join discussions covering customer acquisition, digital commerce and business expansion. An interactive panel with live audience polling is also planned.

The workshop brings together organisations working across business registration, digital transformation, financing, marketing, export readiness and business advisory.

Partners named in the programme include the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), SME Corp. Malaysia, FundedHere, Infobip, Luxana Technologies, NP Digital and RichWorks Consulting Group.

Why Logistics Matters in Direct-to-Consumer Growth

D2C growth is not only about launching a website. Businesses also need reliable fulfilment, customer service and delivery systems once orders begin arriving.

Pos Malaysia says its nationwide network reaches more than 11 million addresses and includes over 3,000 touchpoints. This infrastructure gives the company a role in supporting SMEs that want to reach customers directly across Malaysia.

For smaller businesses, connecting digital sales with dependable fulfilment could help create a smoother path from online discovery to repeat purchase.

The wider benefit is a stronger SME ecosystem. Businesses that develop their own brands, customer relationships and digital capabilities are better placed to expand while contributing to Malaysia’s growing digital commerce economy.

Supporting the Next Stage of Malaysia’s SME Economy

Malaysia’s SMEs remain an important part of the country’s business landscape, and digital commerce has opened new ways for smaller firms to reach customers.

The next stage will require more than marketplace visibility. Stronger brands, better customer retention, digital skills and reliable fulfilment will all play a part.

Initiatives such as SME Jumpstart can give entrepreneurs a practical space to understand these areas, meet ecosystem partners and consider how direct customer relationships could support longer-term business growth.
