The imminent commencement of the new school term, scheduled in merely four days, looms as a challenge for parents impacted by recent floods. Seeking refuge in temporary relief centers (PPS), these parents face the daunting task of preparing their children for school amidst the aftermath of the calamity.

Mohd Shamsul Wahid, a 38-year-old resident of Kampung Serongga, revealed the inundation of his home in waters exceeding two meters since the previous Monday. Recounting this as his third flood encounter since November, he lamented the destruction of all their possessions. Perturbed by the lack of preparation for his daughters' schooling, set to commence at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sri Kiambang and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sri Kiambang, he expressed concerns about the loss of essential school items due to the flood.

The situation exacerbates for Mohd Shamsul as he grapples with the loss of his livelihood as a construction worker, due to the prolonged monsoon season. Hoping for leniency from authorities concerning school uniforms when classes resume, he urged for flexibility given the circumstances.

Similarly affected by the floods, retired army personnel Rezak Hamat, aged 63, residing in Kampung Seberang Merbau, voiced worry over his son's academic pursuits. Mohd Razim, a 17-year-old student at SMK Sri Kiambang currently undertaking the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2023 examinations, faces hindrances in his studies. Damaged reference books due to the flood have left him reliant solely on a smartphone for his revision. In an effort to facilitate a conducive study environment, Razim has relocated to a cousin's house.

The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2023 examinations, initiated on December 5, are scheduled to persist until March 7, 2024, further intensifying the challenges faced by affected students.

As the Ministry of Education gears up for the upcoming academic session starting on January 2, 2024, the plight of these flood-impacted families urges for consideration and support from educational authorities to alleviate the burden on students and parents grappling with the aftermath of the natural disaster.
