TAWAU: The Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL) said the carcass of a headless Bornean pygmy elephant found in an oil palm plantation area in Kalabakan on Wednesday had already decomposed and deteriorated significantly.
Hence, its Director, Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said the condition of the carcass prevented his team from performing a post-mortem.
“They believed to have been killed prior to the discovery, unlike the second elephant found earlier,” he said, when contacted by Daily Express.
He said that the discovery of the third elephant carcass near the locations of the first two headless elephants, believed to have been killed in January and earlier this month, marked the third reported case of Bornean pygmy elephant killings this year.
