Postal Services Act amendments are expected to be tabled next year to strengthen courier industry security and curb misuse of delivery services

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry is expected to table amendments to the Postal Services Act next year to strengthen security measures in the courier industry.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the amendments were expected to be tabled during the first Parliament sitting next year or, at the latest, the second sitting.

“Since last year, engagement sessions have been held with courier companies, and we have asked for their cooperation to ensure that products being sent do not involve any security or legal issues.

“At the same time, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Communications Ministry are reviewing the Postal Services Act to make several amendments, including ensuring that the courier sector is covered under the Act and strengthening security measures as requested by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),” he said.

He told this to reporters after attending the TikTok Shop Summit Malaysia, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, here today.

Prior to this, PDRM said it would hold discussions with MCMC and the Transport Ministry to tighten procedures involving courier services, delivery of goods and p-hailing.

Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan had said that weaknesses in the courier and p-hailing services ecosystem had been exploited by criminal syndicates to transport prohibited substances.
