In a recent development concerning the legal proceedings against Naimah Khalid, the wife of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, the sessions court in Kuala Lumpur has granted her temporary release of her passport. The permission allows her to travel to Singapore and Switzerland for specific reasons this month.

Judge Azura Alwi approved the application, with no objections raised by the prosecution, represented by deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin. Naimah Khalid cited an invitation to an art exhibition in Switzerland from June 10 to 16, followed by work commitments in Singapore, as reasons for her travel. Her passport is to be temporarily released from the date of the application until June 30.

Naimah Khalid faces charges related to her alleged failure to declare her ownership of companies, several plots of land, and two vehicles, as mandated by an asset declaration notice under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act. The trial began on January 23, where she pleaded not guilty.

If convicted, Naimah Khalid could face a jail term of up to five years and a fine of not more than RM100,000. Currently, out on bail of RM250,000 with one surety, she had surrendered her passport to the court as part of the bail conditions.

The legal proceedings against Naimah Khalid stem from her purported non-compliance with an asset declaration notice issued by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). She was charged under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act for failing to adhere to the terms of the notice.

During earlier stages of the case, Deputy Public Prosecutors Ahmad Feisal Azmi and Fadhly Zamry represented the prosecution, while Naimah Khalid was represented by a legal team comprising Yusof Zainal Abiden, M Puravalen, Yunos Shariff, and Alex Tan.

Notably, this legal saga intertwines with broader scrutiny of the financial affairs of Daim Zainuddin's family. MACC's investigation, which includes Naimah Khalid and her sons, Amir and Amin Zainuddin, has been ongoing. The family has a pending application for judicial review proceedings regarding MACC's probe, awaiting a decision from Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.
