Powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake rocks Japan as residents are warned

  • A powerful earthquake, measuring magnitude 6.7, struck off the coast of Japan's Miyagi region, north of Tokyo.
  • The Japanese government issued emergency warnings to residents in five prefectures following the tremor.
  • Japanese authorities rated the earthquake a five on their 1-7 intensity scale.
  • Despite the strong tremor, officials confirmed there was no immediate risk of a tsunami.
  • The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake's epicentre was 50km east of Ofunato in Miyagi, at a depth of approximately 43km.
