Iraq's Iran-backed Kata'ib Hezbollah militia has threatened to launch new attacks on US military bases in the region following renewed Israeli strikes on Iran.
The group said overnight it would carry out the attacks if the United States were to join the Israeli strikes, launched in response to fresh Iranian attacks on Israel on Sunday evening.
Several powerful militias are active in Iraq, receiving varying degrees of support from neighbouring Iran.
Since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran in late February, they have claimed responsibility for hundreds of attacks in the region, including on US facilities and targets associated with Kurdish groups.
The Kurds are one of the most significant opposition groups in Iran and some of them are allied with the US.
In Iraq, some militias have agreed to place their weapons under state control following pressure from the US. Kata'ib Hezbollah, one of the most powerful militias allied with Tehran, continues to oppose such a move.
