Powering PH’s sustainable energy agenda

THE Philippines has adopted an increasingly ambitious sustainable energy agenda aimed at reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security and diversifying the country’s power mix. Through renewable energy (RE) policies, investment incentives and climate commitments, the government seeks to accelerate the development of clean energy sources in pursuit of long-term economic growth.

Supporting the nation’s transition toward a cleaner energy future, AboitizPower’s Cleanergy program stands at the forefront of responsible power generation. Launched in 2009 to promote clean and RE solutions, Cleanergy harnesses indigenous resources such as hydro, geothermal, solar and other renewable technologies to provide reliable electricity while minimizing environmental impact.

Cleanergy is anchored by a diverse portfolio of RE projects strategically located across the Philippines. These include hydroelectric facilities such as the Magat, Ambuklao and Binga power plants in Northern Luzon, as well as geothermal assets operated through partnerships in key energy-producing regions. In recent years, AboitizPower has accelerated investments in utility-scale solar developments such as the Cayanga-Bugallon Solar Power Project in Pangasinan and the San Carlos Sun Power Project in Negros Occidental.

Complementing these facilities are battery energy storage systems (BESS) designed to augment grid capacity, improve operational flexibility and support renewable integration. These BESS projects store excess electricity during periods of low demand and release it when needed — helping balance supply and demand while facilitating greater integration of RE sources.

Beyond clean energy generation, AboitizPower has undertaken extensive environmental conservation initiatives, including large-scale mangrove reforestation projects in coastal communities across the country. These efforts aim to restore degraded ecosystems, enhance biodiversity and strengthen natural defenses against storm surges, coastal erosion and the impacts of climate change.

Collaboration

Working closely with local governments, environmental organizations and community stakeholders, the company has supported the planting and maintenance of thousands of mangrove seedlings in strategic coastal areas. The initiative not only contributes to carbon sequestration but also helps sustain fisheries, improve livelihoods and promote long-term ecological resilience.

A centerpiece of AboitizPower’s environmental education efforts is the Cleanergy Park in Punta Dumalag City. Established as a biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness center, the park serves as a sanctuary for native flora and fauna while providing visitors with opportunities to learn about sustainable development and ecological stewardship. The facility features nature trails, mangrove areas and exhibits, highlighting the importance of protecting the country’s natural resources through guided tours and community outreach programs as well as partnerships with schools and environmental groups.

Punta Dumalag’s transformation over the past 17 years demonstrates the long-term impact of sustained environmental stewardship. In 2009, portions of the coastline were characterized by sparse vegetation, limited mangrove cover and environmental degradation resulting from decades of coastal pressures. Recognizing the area’s ecological significance, AboitizPower initiated rehabilitation efforts through reforestation, coastal cleanups, habitat protection and biodiversity conservation programs. By 2026, Punta Dumalag has evolved into a thriving coastal ecosystem with mature mangrove stands, improved wildlife habitats and the well-established Aboitiz Cleanergy Park.

As the Philippines advances its sustainable development agenda, the Cleanergy program demonstrates how green energy, environmental conservation and community engagement can work together to create lasting value.
