PPA digital booking boosts port operational efficiency

THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) recorded improved passenger throughput and stabilized terminal density following the pilot of its Online Reservation Assistance System (ORAS).

PPA replaced manual queuing with a digital booking process at PMO MarQuez, PMO Batangas, and the Port of Calapan, requiring travelers to secure slots online and present digital passes at helpdesks for verification.

PPA performance data indicates the system addressed logistical bottlenecks by regulating arrival patterns and reducing peak-period waiting times. Scheduled bookings managed passenger density and minimized overcrowding, allowing local government units to coordinate traffic flow based on real-time arrival data.

PPA managed over 2,000 social media inquiries and 100 media engagements during the pilot. Traveler feedback cited increased boarding certainty and more efficient gate entry compared to previous high-volume operations.

PPA management is currently analyzing data to refine technical protocols and address public adjustment challenges.

PPA General Manager Jay Santiago said the agency will use these results to scale the system across the national port network.

“This is just the beginning. The positive response to ORAS shows that digital solutions can greatly improve the travel experience of our passengers. We will continue to develop and expand systems like this to make port travel more convenient, efficient and responsive to the needs of the public,” Santiago added.

PPA will utilize stakeholder feedback to enhance system reliability and streamline future implementation phases.
