KUALA LUMPUR — Independent preacher Muhammad Zamri Vinoth and activist Arun Dorasamy are expected to be charged tomorrow at the Magistrates’ Courts in Kuala Lumpur and Penang respectively.

Zamri’s lawyer, Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, confirmed the development while speaking to Scoop, adding that the court session in Kuala Lumpur is scheduled for 9am and that Zamri will be present.

However, Haniff said the defence team has yet to receive confirmation on the specific legal provisions under which Zamri will be charged.

“We are not sure about the section or sections. As it stands, we don’t know,” he said.

It was reported earlier that the investigation into the independent preacher over a statement made during a gathering on February 7 had been referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).

Meanwhile, Arun Dorasamy is expected to be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code at the Jawi Magistrate’s Court in Penang at 9am tomorrow.

According to his lawyer, Rajesh Nagarajan, the charge relates to Arun’s response to remarks allegedly made by Zamri Vinoth.

“Arun’s statement was in response to remarks allegedly made by Zamri Vinoth last year (2025) during the Thaipusam period, in which he claimed that those carrying the ‘kavadi’ were intoxicated and dancing.

“In reaction to those remarks, Arun issued a statement demanding that the authorities take action,” Nagarajan said while speaking to Scoop.

During that period, Arun also warned that if no action was taken, he would organise a demonstration to protest the matter.

Arun recently confirmed that he is expected to be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code. — March 16, 2026
