Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Fuziah Salleh, has cautioned against premature speculation surrounding the targeted subsidy programme, urging all parties to await the official announcement by the government. Dismissing foreign media reports suggesting an imminent increase in fuel prices, Fuziah emphasized the importance of government-led communication on such matters.

Speaking to reporters at the Aidilfitri Celebration at KPDN Kelantan, Fuziah reiterated that no official announcement had been made regarding the subsidy programme. She stressed the government's commitment to implementing preparatory measures to ensure a smooth rollout once the programme is launched. Among these measures is the provision of lorry vehicle fleet card facilities to enable companies to benefit from the diesel subsidy.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, spokesperson for the Unity Government, clarified that the Cabinet had not discussed any plans to raise petrol and diesel prices. He refuted foreign media reports suggesting otherwise, underlining the government's authority in making such announcements.

In light of concerns over the potential impact of civil servants' salary increases on the cost of goods, Fuziah assured that KPDN would closely monitor market dynamics to prevent exploitation by traders. Any unjustified price hikes would be met with strict enforcement measures, including penalties for profiteering traders.

Providing insights into KPDN's enforcement efforts, Fuziah revealed that Kelantan KPDN had conducted 29,941 premises inspections from January to May 4. These inspections resulted in 296 recorded cases, with the majority involving violations of the Control of Supplies Act 1961. Notably, 109 individuals were apprehended for various offences, amounting to a total value of RM2.6 million.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by smuggling activities, particularly in areas like Kelantan with its porous borders, Fuziah emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation. The establishment of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency is expected to bolster integrated enforcement efforts, contributing to enhanced border security and curbing illicit trade activities.
