In a recent development, a six-month pregnant woman, Siti Amiza Baharuddin, 27, admitted her involvement in soliciting clients for prostitution via the Telegram app under the alias ‘Miza Ozawa’. This confession was made in the Bandar Baru Bangi Magistrate’s Court.
Siti Amiza faced charges of engaging in prostitution activities from a condominium unit in Bukit Mahkota, Kajang, on June 6 at 4 PM. The charges were framed under Section 372B of the Penal Code, which stipulates a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine, or both. Magistrate Nurdiyanah Mohd Nawawi has scheduled her sentencing for June 24.
Additionally, Siti Amiza was convicted of possessing obscene materials and unregistered medicines. The court imposed a one-month prison sentence and a total fine of RM12,500. Specifically, for the obscene materials charge, she received a one-month prison term and a RM6,500 fine, with a default of seven months imprisonment if the fine is unpaid. For the unregistered medicines charge, she was fined RM6,000, with a default of six months imprisonment.
Both sentences are to run consecutively from the date of her arrest on June 6. The obscene materials were found on her laptop and three mobile phones at the same location and date. This offence falls under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code, which can lead to a maximum of three years in prison, a fine, or both.
Further, Siti Amiza was charged with possessing two boxes each of ‘Secret Negro’ and ‘Dara Jelita’. This violates Regulation 7(1)(a) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. The charge, framed under Regulation 30(1), is punishable under Section 12(2) of the Sale of Drugs Act 1952. This act prescribes a maximum fine of RM25,000 or three years in prison for a first offense, and up to RM50,000 or five years in prison for subsequent offenses.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Liyana Mohd Sulaiman urged the court to issue a deterrent sentence and order the sentences to run consecutively, emphasizing the need for stringent measures.
In her defence, Siti Amiza, who did not have legal representation, appealed for leniency, citing her lack of income and the confiscation of her savings intended for childbirth. She implored the court for the minimum possible fine, stating, “I support myself in Selangor and request the minimum possible fine.”
The case highlights the legal consequences of engaging in illegal activities and underscores the challenges faced by individuals entangled in such offenses. As the legal proceedings continue, the court’s decision on June 24 will determine Siti Amiza’s fate.
