The future of the Community Shield is in doubt, as Premier League clubs want the game to be scrapped from the calendar.

The match takes place at the start of every new season, with the Premier League winners taking on the FA Cup winners.

If the same team wins both competitions in the past campaign, the first and second placed sides in the Premier League contest the game.

Per The Times, there are many options for revamping the Community Shield.

One is to play the game during mid-season or during the first match-week of the Premier League.

There is also the possibly it will be axed entirely, as most clubs and players see it as a glorified pre-season friendly and nothing more.
