KUALA LUMPUR: The bedrock of a thriving democratic society lies in the bedrock of freedom of speech and expression, a fact underscored by Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker, the MCA vice-president. Ti Lian Ker, in a recent statement, reiterated that these rights are enshrined in the Federal Constitution and are applicable to all citizens, stressing that they encompass the essential freedom to engage in critical questioning and constructive debates concerning policies.

What Ti Lian Ker deems crucial, however, is the understanding that these constitutional rights are impervious to encroachments, curtailments, or suppressions orchestrated by political entities. In a society where diversity of thought and opinion abounds, it is vital to eschew employing religion, race, or culture as pretences to stifle the exercise of these rights.

Drawing attention to the unfolding situation, Ti Lian Ker directed his comments towards Umno Youth chief Dr. Akmal Salleh, advocating for humility and the upholding of legal and constitutional principles. He urged Dr. Akmal Salleh to embrace the role of permitting Malaysians to voice their concerns and apprehensions without intimidation.

While acknowledging Islam's significance as the official religion, Ti Lian Ker also emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant against the undercurrent of 'political Islam'. He drew parallels with the historical era of the 1980s and 1990s, characterizing it as a period where the fusion of politics and religion wrought widespread damage, leading to distortions of the nation's fabric. He pinpointed the divisive nature of employing religion for political gains, which often resulted in intolerance and persecution, highlighting the lessons that history has taught us.

The backdrop of Ti Lian Ker's commentary is the recent controversy stemming from the proposed introduction of the "Imam Al-Nawawi 40 Hadith" module in public schools. The concerns raised by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong and the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Taoism (MCCBCHST) were deemed by Ti Lian Ker as valid and deserving of respect. Ti Lian Ker critiqued Dr. Akmal Salleh's response to these concerns as "brutish" and "uncouth", asserting that his approach disregarded the spirit of constructive dialogue.

Furthermore, Ti Lian Ker illuminated the broader impact of such communication styles on the public image of political entities, urging a return to the ethos of humility, respect, and tolerance exemplified by the founding fathers of the nation. As he pointed out, this stance is markedly distinct from the confrontational and aggressive political culture that typified the 1980s and 1990s.

In the larger context, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek's recent launch of the "Imam Al-Nawawi 40 Hadith" module, aimed at inculcating the teachings of Prophet Muhammad among Muslim students, has stirred a broader discourse on the boundaries of religious expression within the education system. This discourse, as illuminated by Ti Lian Ker's comments, is not only about policy but also about fostering a culture of understanding, respect, and democratic engagement.
