In a staunch defence of public servants' pension benefits, Datuk Adnan Mat, the president of the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs), emphasized that pensions should be regarded as a rightful privilege for those dedicated to serving the public. Adnan Mat asserted that any notion of scrapping or delaying these benefits for future public servants should not even be entertained. Instead, he urged that it be seen as a form of acknowledgement for the substantial contributions made throughout their lengthy service.

Adnan Mat drew a crucial distinction between public servants and politicians, highlighting the enduring commitment of the former compared to the relatively shorter tenures of the latter. He pointed out that public servants often receive modest pensions, with some receiving approximately RM1,000 per month after dedicating three decades or more in service.

Furthermore, Adnan Mat stressed that comparisons between public servants' pensions and those of parliament members, elected representatives, or appointed ministers and deputy ministers were misguided. He underscored that Cuepacs and public servants have never harboured envy or raised objections regarding the pensions of honourable members.

In response to suggestions to streamline pensions for members of parliament, Adnan Mat proposed that only the highest pension be provided to assist in government cost-saving efforts. He remained resolute in asserting that Cuepacs would not compromise on proposals to diminish the existing privileges held by current public servants, including matters related to pensions.

Adnan Mat passionately articulated the sacrifices made by public servants for the country, emphasizing that their salaries were not exorbitant even during active service. Now, post-retirement, many find themselves questioning the pension benefits they rightfully earned.

Recent discussions on pension reforms have gained traction, with former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar expressing support for abolishing pensions for parliamentarians. He also advocated for the removal of pensions for the multitude of public servants, citing potential fiscal savings for the government, which may face up to RM50 billion in pension expenses over the next decade if reforms are not implemented.

Joining this discourse, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman endorsed the proposal to do away with pensions for ministers and parliament members, advocating for their inclusion in the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) contribution scheme, and aligning them with the broader workforce.

As discussions surrounding pension reform continue to evolve, Cuepacs' unwavering defence of public servants' pension benefits underscores the significance of recognizing their dedicated service to the nation. The ongoing debate will undoubtedly shape the future landscape of retirement benefits for public servants and political figures alike.
