Preserving Sabah's diversity vital for peace, harmony: Joachim

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's diverse racial, cultural, and religious background remains its greatest strength and must be continuously safeguarded to ensure lasting peace and harmony, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam (pic).

Speaking at the 2026 Zhong Yuan Festival Celebration and Charity Auction Dinner here on Sunday, Joachim highlighted that despite their varied backgrounds, Sabahans continue to coexist peacefully through mutual respect.

He stressed that cultural and community events provide a vital platform for people to understand different customs and beliefs, which helps strengthen tolerance and prevent misunderstandings that could disrupt social unity.

Joachim, who is also the state Works and Utilities Minister, reaffirmed the Sabah government's support for initiatives that benefit the public, particularly charitable and welfare activities organised by non-governmental organisations to complement state efforts.

He expressed gratitude to the organisers for preserving cultural heritage while contributing to the community, hoping more associations will host programs that foster unity and a spirit of mutual help among the people.
