Kota Kinabalu: Borneo’s mystical culture is perpetuated through tattoos. It has, undoubtedly, become a fashion statement says Denver William, 61, who calls himself a defender of all things Sarawak.

“For instance, the bunga terung (aubergine flower) commonly done on the chest symbolises a rite of passage into manhood following an excursion. It’s compulsory for us Dayaks and to be done one at a time.

“Yet many are doing it two at a time without learning of its true meaning. We don’t need to take westerners as an example, we can look at our own youth in Sarawak,” he said.
