Prime Minister Andy Burnham runs Great North Run to fight UK homelessness

  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham has taken part in the 45th Great North Run in a personal capacity to raise funds for Changing Lives, a charity supporting individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Fulfilling his pledge to contribute a share of his earnings to charity every month, Burnham has donated 15 per cent of his first month's salary as Prime Minister to the organisation.
  • The fundraising run follows his recent visit to Alex's Place in Newcastle to launch a national drive backed by £442 million in extra funding, which aims to provide rough sleepers with a route off the streets by Christmas.
  • Burnham described tackling homelessness as a moral mission and praised Changing Lives for helping people rebuild their lives by offering long-term support beyond emergency shelter.
  • In addition to his Prime Ministerial salary donation, Burnham separately contributes 15 per cent of his MP salary to local causes within his Makerfield constituency.
