In the aftermath of the Pardons Board's decision to reduce the prison sentence of Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his respect for the board's verdict, emphasizing that he had no influence over the matter. Anwar acknowledged that the decision to halve Najib's 12-year prison term and reduce his RM210 million fine for misappropriating 1MDB unit funds was within the prerogative of the Pardons Board, chaired by Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah during his tenure as the Yang diPertuan Agong.

During an interview with Al Jazeera, Anwar highlighted the importance of respecting the process, asserting that the power to pardon is legally accorded to the Agong. He emphasized that the Pardons Board would have received proper legal advice before making the decision to reduce Najib's sentence by 50 percent.

Anwar underscored the universality of Najib's application, stating that it was in line with the rights available to all Malaysians under the Federal Constitution. He stressed the necessity of acknowledging and respecting the rights of individuals convicted to appeal to the Pardons Board.

The recent decision by the Pardons Board resulted in a reduction of Najib's prison sentence from 12 years to six years for the misappropriation of RM42 million. This adjustment potentially moves his release date to August 23, 2028, a noteworthy development considering Najib has been in prison since August 23, 2022. The Pardons Board also reduced his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million, with his early release contingent on settling this amount by the specified date. Failure to do so may delay his release until August 23, 2029.

Despite this reprieve, Najib faces an ongoing trial related to 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds amounting to RM2.27 billion. The charges include four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering, underscoring the legal challenges that persist for the former prime minister.
