Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to embark on an official journey to Qatar from May 12 to 14, with the aim of bolstering the enduring ties and diverse cooperation between Malaysia and Qatar, as announced by the Foreign Ministry, commonly referred to as Wisma Putra.

This inaugural visit by the Prime Minister, upon the gracious invitation of the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, coincides with the momentous occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Qatar.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will be accorded an official welcome ceremony by the Amir of Qatar, followed by an audience with the esteemed leader. Additionally, a bilateral meeting is scheduled between the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani. The discussions between the two leaders are expected to encompass various aspects of bilateral relations, with a particular focus on economic cooperation, education, and the exchange of perspectives on regional and international issues, including the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Anwar will actively participate in the 4th Qatar Economy Forum (QEF) 2024 during his stay in Doha. This forum presents a platform for engaging with Qatari business leaders and potential investors who express interest in contributing to Malaysia's Madani Economy initiatives.

In addition to official engagements, Prime Minister Anwar is scheduled to interact with the Malaysian community residing in Doha, strengthening ties with the diaspora.

The Malaysian delegation accompanying Prime Minister Anwar during this significant visit includes Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

The statement released by Wisma Putra highlights a substantial increase in Malaysia's trade with Qatar during the period of January to March 2024, amounting to RM1.43 billion (US$303.9 million), marking a significant surge of 178.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

In 2023, Qatar emerged as Malaysia's fifth-largest trading partner, sixth-largest export destination, and sixth-largest import source within the West Asia region, underlining the growing economic ties between the two nations.

Prime Minister Anwar's visit underscores Malaysia's commitment to nurturing and expanding bilateral relations with Qatar, further enhancing cooperation across various sectors for mutual benefit and prosperity.
