Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed profound disappointment with the United States' lack of response to Malaysia's appeal for action to halt Israeli hostilities in Gaza.
Anwar revealed that he had directly appealed to US President Joe Biden, urging him to use America's significant influence to stop the violence. According to Bernama, Anwar said Biden listened “very attentively” but ultimately offered no response.
“I was addressing a friend,” Anwar emphasized, showing his frustration with the US's inaction.
Reiterating his call for Washington to intervene, Anwar highlighted America's capability to influence the situation. “The US should do whatever is necessary to stop the hostilities. They have the influence, mechanism, and diplomatic skills, combined they can force Israel to stop the atrocities,” he insisted.
Anwar also defended his recent meeting with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar, clarifying that it was a diplomatic effort to persuade Hamas to consider the concerns of others. “Whether you like it or not, they represent a portion of the Palestinian people in Gaza, and you cannot deny that,” he stated.
Following his meeting with Hamas leaders, Anwar reassured that it was part of Malaysia’s broader efforts to support the peace process in Gaza, despite the US designating Hamas as a terrorist organization.
Anwar acknowledged that his engagement with the Hamas delegation might have caused unease among Malaysia’s Western allies, particularly the US.
Meanwhile, the health ministry in Gaza has reported a staggering toll: at least 35,562 people have been killed and 79,652 injured since the conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted.
Anwar's strong stance and calls for US intervention underline the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Anwar's vocal criticism reflects the mounting frustration within the international community over the ongoing violence in Gaza. His firm stance is a call to action, urging global powers to leverage their influence for peace.
The staggering human toll in Gaza highlights the dire need for immediate intervention. With thousands dead and tens of thousands injured, the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate, demanding urgent global attention and action.
Anwar's meeting with Hamas leaders, despite its controversial nature, underscores Malaysia's commitment to facilitating dialogue and seeking solutions. By engaging with all parties involved, Anwar aims to foster a broader understanding and push for a lasting peace in the region.
The Prime Minister's unwavering call for the US to step up and use its diplomatic prowess is a crucial plea for international cooperation and decisive action to end the bloodshed in Gaza.
