KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed the issue of government announcements during election campaigns, asserting that they could not be entirely discontinued during such periods. While he acknowledged concerns regarding the alleged vote-buying incident involving Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's grant announcement in Terengganu, Anwar emphasized that such decisions were made prior to the official date set for the six state elections on August 12.

Anwar clarified that the practice of making announcements during election campaigns was not inherently linked to the upcoming state elections. He firmly stated, "It has nothing to do with state elections; someone suggested no announcements should be made at all, but I'm the prime minister, and I have a country to take care of." His stance highlights the pragmatic aspects of governance, emphasizing that essential government business must continue even during election periods.

However, the Prime Minister was also quick to remind all ruling parties that they must refrain from using government resources to gain an unfair advantage during their election campaigns. This assertion aims to maintain a level playing field and uphold the principles of a fair electoral process.

Earlier in the day, the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) raised concerns about the independence of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) after its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, defended the deputy prime minister's conditional promise of a grant.

The controversy stemmed from an event in Dungun where Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced grants totalling RM250,000 for the Terengganu Malaysia Youth Council, RM200,000 for motorcycle teams across the state, and RM100,000 for the Central Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah) youth association. Zahid, in his capacity within the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, added that the grant amounts could be increased based on the performance of youth in the state election.

He expressed confidence that the "blue and red wave" would sway the political tide in Terengganu during the upcoming state polls, with the support of youth leaders and voters aged between 18 and 30, as well as those between 31 and 40.

As the issue unfolded, public scrutiny also turned towards the independence and impartiality of the MACC, an institution entrusted with combating corruption in Malaysia. The perception of fair play and the integrity of the electoral process is of paramount importance in fostering trust among citizens and ensuring a genuinely democratic electoral system.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended the necessity of government announcements during election campaigns, asserting that halting all official communications during such periods would not be practical. However, he stressed the importance of adhering to ethical standards and refraining from exploiting government resources for electoral gains. The spotlight on the MACC's independence highlights the significance of transparent and unbiased institutions in upholding the sanctity of the electoral process. Ultimately, fostering accountability and trust among the populace remains essential for the continued progress of the nation.
