PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed that all memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and cooperation agreements between Malaysia and China be implemented without delay, in a move aimed at accelerating bilateral collaboration.
Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the instruction was raised by the Prime Minister during the weekly Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
He added that the Cabinet has decided the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take the lead in coordinating the implementation of the signed MoUs.
“As an example, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook recently mentioned the proposal for a twin-hub partnership between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Henan International Airport in China.
“This is one of the initiatives that has seen rapid development, with several meetings already taking place over the past few days,” Fahmi said during the post-Cabinet weekly press conference.
The move reflects Malaysia’s intent to strengthen strategic ties with China across various sectors, including infrastructure, logistics, trade, and technology, by ensuring existing agreements are acted upon swiftly and effectively.
Previously, media reports stated that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the exchange of 31 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and documents covering various sectors of cooperation between Malaysia and China.
The exchange took place during President Xi’s state visit to Malaysia from 15 to 17 April, following an invitation from His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.
This marked President Xi’s second official visit to Malaysia in 12 years, the first being in 2013, during which both countries upgraded their diplomatic ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
In a separate matter, Fahmi said the transmission system at Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower) remains fully operational despite ongoing maintenance and safety-related works.
The minister assured that the Ministry of Communications is closely monitoring the situation and hopes the tower can be reopened to the public soon.
“We are not compromising on safety, which remains our top priority to ensure the comfort and security of visitors,” he said during his weekly press briefing.
“We understand that this is a critical structure—a restricted zone, a key location that houses transmission facilities. These systems continue to operate without any issues.
“As for the general public, we hope that previously identified maintenance and upgrade needs can be resolved swiftly. We expect the tower to reopen soon,” he added.
KL Tower was temporarily closed on April 17 to allow for essential maintenance and resolution of safety concerns. The works are being carried out by the new concessionaire, LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd (LSHSM), which officially took over the tower’s operations, management, and maintenance on 1 April 2025.
The Ministry had earlier clarified that Kuala Lumpur Tower Sdn Bhd’s (MKLSB) continued occupation of the premises after 31 March 2025 was no longer legally valid. As a result, the Federal Lands Commissioner issued two evacuation notices to MKLSB via letters dated April 3 and 9. - April 23, 2025
