Viewers in the UK and Ireland will be able to watch the highly anticipated Princess Diana docuseries on Prime Video, featuring the late royal’s secret recordings.
The streamer has nabbed the UK and Ireland rights to Diana: Her Secret Confessions, a new three-part series – titled elsewhere as Diana Unheard – that features unheard audio of the Princess of Wales.
Producers secured access to hours of tapes that Diana recorded in conversation with her friend James Colthurst in 1991, six years before she died aged 36 in a fatal car crash in Paris.
The tapes – which she and Colhurst recorded in secret and covered topics such as her relationship with her husband, now King Charles III, and his wife, now Queen Camilla – were used in Andrew Morton’s explosive book Diana: Her True Story, published in 1992.
Also featured in their conversations are discussions of her brother-in-law Andrew Mountbatten Windsor (formerly Prince Andrew), as well as her sons.
Excerpts of the recordings have been heard before, including in a 2017 National Geographic documentary about the Princess, but Love Monday TV, who are producing the series, have secured access to the full five hours of audio, working in collaboration with Colthurst, Morton, and Diana: Her True Story publisher Michael O’Mara.
The female-led team making the docuseries wants to change the narrative surrounding Princess Diana, according to Love Monday TV’s Kerene Barefield.
“Diana, Princess of Wales is often portrayed as a victim of her circumstances, with the narrative around her even today still being written and argued about by powerful men,” Barefield told Deadline. “By centering our series on hours of intimate recordings Diana made herself, Diana: Her Secret Confessions reclaims and reframes her own story, in her own words.”
She continued: “Through exclusive access for the first time to the complete collection of these extraordinary tapes, together with interviews with those who knew her, audiences will hear Diana’s voice as never before, showing her not as a passive victim of events, but as a strong woman who is risking everything to take control of her own narrative.”
A release date for Diana: Her Secret Confessions is yet to be announced.
The series follows on from the publishing of Swan Song: Diana, My Sister by Charles Spencer last month, a book that rocked the royal family.
Published nearly 30 years after his sister’s death, the book aimed to “tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective” and focused, in part, on the King’s behaviour, including is claim that the King told him “we’ll forget her soon enough” after Diana’s death.
In response to the claims made in the memoir, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson previously said: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”
