The Prisons Department will fully cooperate with police in investigating the death of a 38-year-old inmate at Marang Prison following an alleged assault.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Prisons Department will give its full cooperation to the police to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of an inmate at Marang Prison on Monday.
It said the incident involved a 38-year-old male inmate who was found unconscious after allegedly being assaulted by several other inmates.
The department said the prison officers immediately took the victim to Merchang Health Clinic for medical treatment.
“However, the medical officer confirmed that the victim had died. The remains were sent to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu for a post-mortem,” it said in a statement today.
It said the authorities were investigating the incident, including determining the cause of the incident and identifying those involved.
“The Prisons Department takes the incident seriously and urges the public not to speculate, make assumptions or disseminate unverified information about it, particularly while the investigation is ongoing,” it added.
Yesterday, Marang Police chief Supt Sofian Redzuan said police received a report at 12.31 pm on Monday from a prison warden.
The victim, who was from Terengganu, was allegedly assaulted in a room by three suspects aged between 21 and 35.
